Carlo Pellicani (after Carlo Buzzi), Moses' Water Miracle

1807-13
Marble
West façade, Milan Cathedral

As in Exodus 17:1-7, Moses, pictured without the traditional horns or rays of light, has taken some of the elders with him to the rock at Mount Horeb. He strikes it with his staff and water flows to slake the thirst of the Israelites.

The panel is one of six along the base of the façade that celebrate Old Testament figures who were considered types of Christ. Four others reference the New Testament and Mary.
